Spontaneous Adventure, is an introspective mixed reality experience that uses 5-view projection technology and immersive audio to tell a story of how gender oppression affects my dreams.


“Some memories lurk deep inside our brains, uncanny but having a lasting impact on us. These stories may come from the past, the future, or the collective subconscious. They are fictive, yet undeniably real, vividly expressing our deepest fears and desires.”

Overview


In this project, I took on multiple roles as a director, scriptwriter, multimedia artist, and collaborated with dancers and composer. The experience consists of three stages, smoothly transitioning with a hypnosis fade-in and a meditation fade-out. The central narrative follows a girl who confronts recurring nightmares that blur the line between reality and dreams. With the guidance of her psychologist, she embarks on an adventure to discover the root cause of everything.

ContextSince childhood, dreams have been my best escapism utopia. I have captured these fleeting memories and attempted to translate them into various forms of media for seven years, including books, motion graphics, sculptures and so on.


The reason focus me to create this project, is one day I suddenly realized that there is an elephant in my dream. It looks like I am full of expectations and ambitions for everything on the outside. But I'm the only one who knows how many times I almost didn't survive from the murderer’s hands in my dreams. Thanks to the excellent human defence mechanism, when we encounter extreme pressure, the hippocampus automatically shuts down. Which means we can't remember that event, but the intense emotions will maintain by amygdala. No pain is not a good thing; you might bleed to death without realising it. That’s why when dreams can help us spot early-stage and inconspicuous mental injuries is truly helpful.


I want more people to know that nightmares are not poison; it’s antidotes. The dream is a way to communicate with yourself. Spontaneous Adventure is an ode to girls and marginalized individuals who endure countless challenges and dilemmas in their daily lives.


Details


This project presented significant challenges for me, particularly in conveying emotions and storytelling within a non-VR space and coordinating multiple channels. I faced complexities in composition, color, and narration. To overcome these challenges, I delved into research areas such as emotional color palettes, body expressions, nested metaphoric storytelling, and spatial music. I experimented with various spatial narrative approaches and worked closely with team members to create specific emotional atmospheres within the virtual environment.

To optimize my workflow, I utilized a range of tools and technologies. I used Daz, CharacterCreator, and Unreal Metahuman to create characters, and employed Optitrack motion capture, motionbuilder, iclone, live face, recorder, and Unreal Sequence for smooth and realistic character animations.

Given the fluid and rapidly changing nature of AI-generated video, which aligns well with the concept of dreams, I employed techniques like stablediffusion. This involved using the white model animations generated from Unreal Sequence and converting them into image sequences through PR. By combining ControlNet, Lora, and Prompt, I achieved a stable visual style and continuous, smooth AI-generated videos. I used PR and Final Cut for the editing of all video materials.

The projection aspect involved the use of Isadora and MadMapper for projecting surrounding imagery and the central installation, respectively.

In terms of audio, we utilized 7.1.4 Dolby surround sound, combined with perspective, to create an immersive experience. Skillful use of subwoofers allowed the audience to feel pronounced vibrations, adding a physical sense of pressure.

Presentation


Next StepThe project received positive feedback from 15 shows with around 200 attendees, who found the 10-minute duration insufficient and expressed anticipation for more content. Improvements were made based on audience feedback, enhancing the clarity of the narrator's voice and slowing down the meditation section for a more immersive experience. The goal is to secure a more permanent venue for "Spontaneous Adventure" and apply for festivals and grants while continually enhancing the project.

	Description


Unreal is a commentary on the relationship between reality and the virtual world. The title is a play on the popular game engine, "Unreal Engine", and explores the idea that the virtual world we enter through VR technology may in fact be more real than we think. The piece begins with a fake AR scene in which a black box appears in a room, only visible when wearing a VR headset. This sets the stage for a journey that blurs the lines between reality and fiction.


As the piece progresses, we see recurring patterns in the metro and cars, suggesting a hypnotic state, as well as metaphors for the transfer of consciousness. The viewer is then transported to a pure geometric space, representing the inner workings of the virtual machine, and a personal shape with a VR headset floating in the air, like a god. The question of what is real and what is virtual is left open-ended.


The final scene is an apocalyptic, broken-down version of the first scene, with a person sitting on the same sofa. The piece ends with the appearance of a giant figure, acting as a wake-up call, or possibly as the avatar of the virtual system.


In conclusion, this artwork is a thought-provoking simulation that explores the stream of consciousness and the relationship between reality and the virtual world. It invites multiple interpretations and encourages the viewer to question the nature of their own reality.

A Hunger Artist is a radical reimagining of Kafka's seminal short story about an artist who fasts in a cage. Set in an online streaming world, this production examines the human condition and noble ways of interactions in the current time through the hunger artist's questions of “what does it mean for him to gain attention from people” and “what are his real values that he can insist on” in that world.

Nepenthes is an artwork that explores the theme of deception and manipulation through the metaphor of carnivorous plants. The genus Nepenthes, also known as tropical pitcher plants, are known for their bright leaves and sweet nectar which they use to lure prey into their traps. The artwork presents an immersive visual experience of the boundless wilderness, with huge stone monuments that draw the viewer in deeper and deeper, like falling into a trap.


The artist uses a variety of ambitious symbols such as altars, to represent the bright leaves of the Nepenthes, just like in the real world, where many entities aim to capture our attention by building goals for us. The artwork aims to comment on the manipulation and deception that exists in our society and its attempt to cannibalize our attention.

	Description


Jeeyoon and I created an artwork that re-imagines the classic mermaid story with a dark and thought-provoking twist. Rather than focusing on true love, our version explores the concept of identity and the conflicts that arise from it. We assume a world where there are wars and killings between humans and fish races.


The artwork depicts a mermaid who has just awakened from an illusion and finds itself locked in a dark and damp dungeon. The story follows the mermaid's journey as it tries to escape this nightmare and discover its true identity. The piece highlights the idea that different identities can bring disasters, but sometimes, it can also help one escape a catastrophe. The final scene of the artwork leaves open to interpretation whether the mermaid has finally found the peace and identity it seeks.

Breaking through the limitations of stage plays and cinema, creating a world of immersive horror film and television gaming.The 'Quest Art' is UMEPLAY's pioneering product system, utilizing unsolvable puzzle settings, exploring sensory boundaries, providing zero-distance experiences, and breaking the limitations of stage plays and cinema. It is an unprecedented gaming mode in China, creating a world of immersive horror film and television gaming.

The Quest Art product line was officially launched in October 2019. The hit theme 'INSANE' received positive reviews and ranked first on popular review platforms and ticketing websites within just six months of its release. Subsequently, three immersive live-action films (games) titled 'ENOLA,' 'REVIVER,' and 'SINNER' were released, all ranking highly on entertainment charts. Currently, Quest Art has established 13 stores across 9 provinces and has served a total of 17 million users.

Quest Art not only abandons outdated decryption elements but also arrogantly focuses on the pursuit of immersive experiences to the extreme. It separates the 'audience' from their passive role and bestows upon them new identities as interactive participants and performers, allowing players to truly 'enter' the first-person perspective of the movie world.&#38;nbsp;

The actors in Quest Art are selected through strict screening processes from society and academic institutions. The training period for actors is generally over three months, during which they receive rigorous instruction from professional instructors in physicality, improvisation, and dialogue, and only after passing the assessment can they formally take on various roles.

The presentation style, observation perspective, and conceptual exploration of Quest Art expand the boundaries of urban trendy play and film expression. It allows global users to experience the cutting-edge interactive entertainment mode, subverts tradition, and redefines urban trendy play by using 'reality' to construct virtual gaming worlds. It integrates immersive interactive modes into the traditional escape room industry, opening up a new era of leisure and entertainment.

Day Eater' is one of the many stories related to Japan and war. Japan, which initiated aggressive wars, was already in a desperate state by 1945, but it continued to struggle and became increasingly mad. The harm caused by war is not only reflected in the disasters suffered by the victimized countries but also brings endless sorrow to the people of the aggressor country itself.

OopSense organization detected intense disturbances in a small restaurant in Okinawa, Japan. The owner of the restaurant had been tormented by unnatural phenomena for a long time, greatly troubled and sought divine intervention everywhere. As a result, the organization dispatched several special agents disguised as spiritual mediums to investigate the situation.

An eclipse, originally an astronomical phenomenon, was considered a bad omen in ancient times. The belief in a celestial dog eating the sun during an eclipse existed since ancient times. In this restaurant in Japan, the originally kind and honest owner, after enlisting and fighting on the battlefield for many years, became paranoid and irritable after being injured and discharged. After being deeply brainwashed by militaristic thinking, he brought "war" back to his own home. In order to pledge loyalty to the emperor and fulfill the ridiculous fantasy of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, he forced his younger brother and wife to go to the battlefield, causing their deaths. He even spared no mercy for the family dog. These family members who once respected and loved him all turned into vengeful spirits, yearning to take his life but unable to move on. Finally, with the help of the player, the vengeful spirits fulfilled their wishes. The once happy family, devastated by the ravages of war, ultimately ended up in such a tragic state. The ambition of the Japanese Empire, which originally sought to devour countries around the world, eventually consumed its own people, resulting in a self-inflicted calamity. The eclipse, the 'Day Eater,' ultimately devoured Japan itself.
